1. TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING Analysis
Steven Stamkos
C, Sarnia (OHL)
TSN Rank: 1 Pierre McGuire: It's not just about his numbers, it's about his level of excellence. He's the complete package.
2. LOS ANGELES KINGS Analysis
Drew Doughty
D, Guelph (OHL)
TSN Rank: 2 Bob McKenzie: He's got a level of hockey sense that cannot be measured. His smarts are off the scale. Doughty is an offensive player, but his defence is under-rated. This is a guy that will absolutely be in the NHL next year.
3. ATLANTA THRASHERS Analysis
Zach Bogosian
D, Peterborough (OHL)
TSN Rank: 3 McGuire: This is a gigantically positive move for Atlanta. This guy's got it all going on, and I can't say enough good things about him. This is a cover-up pick for a bad deal, though, when Atlanta traded Braydon Coburn for Alexei Zhitnik.
4. ST. LOUIS BLUES Analysis
Alex Pietrangelo
D, Niagara (OHL)
TSN Rank: 4 McGuire: I love this selection for St. Louis. This is a phenomenal looking young team, especially on defence.
5. TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS Analysis
Luke Schenn
D, Kelowna (WHL)
TSN Rank: 6 McGuire: Toronto wins huge here. This is the start of the re-build and there's no better place to start than on the shoulders of Luke Schenn. He is the Human Eraser on defence. A one man search and destroy defender. This is a franchise player.
6. COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS Analysis
Nikita Filatov
LW, CSKA Moscow (RUS)
TSN Rank: 5 McKenzie: A lot of time you get Russian players and you wonder how they will get acclimatized to North America. This guy speaks English and a little French. He wants to be here. He's already given notice to his Russian team that he's leaving. He has a consistent work ethic and he's a strong team player.
7. NASHVILLE PREDATORS Analysis
Colin Wilson
C, Boston University (NCAA)
TSN Rank: 8 McGuire: This pick makes sense. The Predators need to get bigger and tougher and Wilson brings that. This is a wise pick by Nashville. He was Team USA's best player at the World Juniors.
8. PHOENIX COYOTES Analysis
Mikkel Boedker
LW, Kitchener (OHL)
TSN Rank: 7 McKenzie: He has great wheels and explosive speed. He can score goals and set them up. Kitchener coach Peter DeBoer said he learned how to score ugly goals late this season. he scored two outstanding goals in the Memorial Cup.
9. NEW YORK ISLANDERS Analysis
Josh Bailey
C, Windsor (OHL)
TSN Rank: 12 McKenzie: A good all-around pick, Bailey will be a good player in the NHL, but the Islanders traded down twice knowing they could get him. Ultimately, we will look back and note that the Islanders could have had Luke Schenn, they could have had Nikita Filatov...
10. VANCOUVER CANUCKS Analysis
Cody Hodgson
C, Brampton (OHL)
TSN Rank: 9 McKenzie: I really like this pick because this guy is all about character and leadership. There are a lot of people that believe the only thing that separates him from Stamkos is a lack of explosive speed.
11. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS Analysis
Kyle Beach
C, Everett (WHL)
TSN Rank: 10 McKenzie: He's a hybrid player, a power forward who can score, but he's also a real agitator. He's suffered some injuries including some concussions, and Team Canada wanted nothing to do with him for the Under-18 Team. There have also been some off-ice incidents. He's a real wild card in this draft.
12. BUFFALO SABRES Analysis
Tyler Myers
D, Kelowna (WHL)
TSN Rank: 11 McGuire: That's a smart pick because the Sabres really need help on defence. He needs to get stronger and tougher - he had his first fight just this year, but he loved it. He's big like Zdeno Chara, but he's got very fluid feet. He's not that much of a project.
13. LOS ANGELES KINGS Analysis
Colten Teubert
D, Regina (WHL)
TSN Rank: 13 McGuire: This is such a good pick. Put that pick with Drew Doughty on defence and you've really got something in Los Angeles. He's physical and he loves to get after people. The Kings are building the smart way - strength on the back end, just like Detroit.
14. CAROLINA HURRICANES Analysis
Zach Boychuk
C, Lethbridge (WHL)
TSN Rank: 14 McGuire: Perfect! Tremendous move, I really like Boychuk. He's got pure speed, a great athlete. He's going to be a skilled energy player. His speed is electrifying.
15. OTTAWA SENATORS Analysis
Erik Karlsson
D, Vastra Frolunda (SWE)
TSN Rank: 20 McGuire: He was one of the fastest climbers on everyone's list - some had him as high as number five overall. He's the Swedish Brian Rafalski. You talk about patching holes, this patches a hole on defence for the Senators. Well done Ottawa, very good choice.
16. BOSTON BRUINS Analysis
Joe Colborne
C, Camrose (AJHL)
TSN Rank: 19 McKenzie: It's an interesting pick. It's either a home run or a strikeout. He's compared in style to Joe Thornton, and the question mark on him is that he's a great play-maker who might not be able to do that at the NHL level.
17. ANAHEIM DUCKS Analysis
Jake Gardiner
D, Minnetonka HS (MN)
TSN Rank: 21 McKenzie: We talked about speed, speed and more speed. He's one of the fastest players in the draft. He just switched with from forward to defence and will learn how from a defensive coach, Mike Eaves, at the University of Wisconsin.
18. NASHVILLE PREDATORS Analysis
Chet Pickard
G, Tri-City (WHL)
TSN Rank: 18 McGuire: Bring on the goalie - great choice. I thought they might take him at 15. They desperately need some depth there and this guy is the real deal.
19. PHILADELPHIA FLYERS Analysis
Luca Sbisa
D, Lethbridge (WHL)
TSN Rank: 17 McGuire: They went D, and he's just like another Swiss player, Mark Streit. Very versatile, a good puck mover who makes good decisions.
20. NEW YORK RANGERS Analysis
Michael Del Zotto
D, Oshawa (OHL)
TSN Rank: 15 McKenzie: In the OHL Draft a couple of years ago, Stamkos went first and Del Zotto went second. His game has tailed off a little bit since and he had a poor Under-18 tournament, but he's a great passer with a good shot. Maturity is a question mark. He's certailny got all the tools, he's just got to get the toolbox organized.
21. WASHINGTON CAPITALS Analysis
Anton Gustafsson
C, Vastra Frolunda (SWE)
TSN Rank: 30 McKenzie: Interesting pick. The reason he was rated so low was the fact he has a partially herniated disc in his back. He has the talent, but his health made him a draft wildcard. His father is former Cap forward Bengt Gustafsson.
22. EDMONTON OILERS Analysis
Jordan Eberle
C, Regina (WHL)
TSN Rank: 29 McGuire: Perfecto for the Oilers. They just keep adding dynamic forwards. He plays a lot like Joe Mullen used to - he's a great goal scorer.
23. MINNESOTA WILD Analysis
Tyler Cuma
D, Ottawa (OHL)
TSN Rank: 16 McKenzie: I know for a fact that there were teams that had him ranked in the top 10. I'm shocked he had to wait this long. He's a great skater and a good competitor. He's got some offensive ability, but that's not his game. He's a solid defender and a good leader.
24. NEW JERSEY DEVILS Analysis
Mattias Tedenby
LW, HV-71
TSN Rank: 26 McGuire: This guy has unbelieveable speed. I thought the Capitals would take him, but the Devils have got him now. He's not very big, but can he ever fly. Remember Mats Naslund - he plays like him.
25. CALGARY FLAMES Analysis
Greg Nemisz
C, Windsor (OHL)
TSN Rank: 27 McKenzie: He's a big guy who likes to get into the slot area. He's got a big shot and he'll be a good goal scorer in the NHL. He's hard to move from the front of the net, but his skating needs work.
26. BUFFALO SABRES Analysis
Tyler Ennis
C, Medicine Hat (WHL)
TSN Rank: 33 McKenzie: A very small player at 5-foot-8 and 162 pounds, but he's very quick, very skilled and absolutely fearless. He might beat the odds. He's a one-dimensionial offensive player, but he sure does that very well.
27. WASHINGTON CAPITALS Analysis
John Carlson
D, Indiana (USHL)
TSN Rank: 22 He's a big bruiser headed to the London Knights next year. Scouts are happy as London will do a good job developing him. He's hard and mean with a big shot. he needs to work on his fitness.
28. PHOENIX COYOTES Analysis
Viktor Tikhonov
LW, Cherepovets
TSN Rank: Unranked McKenzie: I talked to a lot of scouts and most of them pegged him as a third round pick, but a lot of teams really liked his skill level. He has an opportunity to get into the Phoenix lineup next season because he's an older prospect - this was his third time through the draft. He was great at the Summit Series and the World Juniors. His greandfather is the legendary Russian coach of the same name.
29. ATLANTA THRASHERS Analysis
Daultan Leveille
C, St. Catharines (GHJHL)
TSN Rank: 35 McKenzie: One of the fastest skaters in the draft, maybe the fastest. He is tall and skinny and played at a low level, but he's going to Michigan State next season.
30. DETROIT RED WINGS Analysis
Thomas McCollum
G, Guelph (OHL)
TSN Rank: 24 A very good goaltender for the Guelph Storm. He started slowly, but really picked it up. He's got a great glove and great rebound control.
